As a client in care, I like the consistency and routine of my day-to-day living, as I know I need cues and reminders to take care of myself and maintain my apartment. With the assistance of my caregivers, we get through my needed routines for personal care and supported living independence. I also like the flexibility in the daily schedule and checklists with workers to plan outings and activities with them. I have a calendar that tells me who is coming in for a shift, so I know who to expect to let into my apartment building for my safety and prepare me for appointments coming up. The workers and I find compromise if we disagree on something, listening to each other’s side of things and find a balance together. I appreciate being treated like an adult and being able to have choices. I appreciate the care and understanding they have for me.

Working with a family that is open to informing their staff of caregivers about the client’s personality, likes, dislikes and interests makes it easier to fit in and understand client needs. Outline of family expectations in the care of their sibling, and flexible scheduling is communicated well right from the start. Clients place is well organized, for client comfort and safety with manageable systems to follow. Family is very firm on the expectations, fair, friendly, and very supportive of their staff. They encourage good self-care for each and every one of their caregivers, and have no problems stepping in when needed.

I find that following a structure and a routine or process for your loved one is really helpful for both the caregiver and the person receiving care. I would recommend structure, processes, checklists and documenting any changes happening to your loved ones every step of the way so you can determine whether there would be need for any adjustments or changes to their routine or care arrangements as they progress with life changes. It made it easier for me to quickly adjust into providing the best care for them.

When I started working with the family I was amazed to see the care and attention that they put into their brothers life so he could maintain his independence. As a care-worker the systems the family has in place ensures I can easily follow his schedule. Their approach to care provides a streamlined and collaborative work environment for everyone caring for him. I highly recommend using these strategies for your loved one.
